Sebastian Gramss (born 1966 in Wilhelmshaven) is a German double bass and composer. He started playing on the electric bass, later swichted to double bass and cello. Gramss studied doublebass and composition in Amsterdam and Cologne.
As bassplayer and composer Sebastian Gramss is mostly active in the field of improvised music, jazz and contemporary music.
He released more than 20 CDs under his name or with his projects.
Together with Frank Wingold (guitare), Lömsch Lehmann (saxophone), Dirk-Peter Kölsch (drums) and Nils Wogram (trombone) he formed in 1993 Underkarl.
He regulary plays also in Oirtrio (with Frank Gratkowski and Tatsuya Nakatani), Fossile3 (with Rudi Mahall), James Choice Orchestra, Scott Fields Freetett, Multibass Orchestra, Knom.T and Das mollsche Gesetz.
He works a.o. with Marilyn Crispell, Fred Frith, Tom Cora, Elliott Sharp, Peter Kowald, Taylor Ho Bynum, Zeena Parkins, Peter Brötzmann, Robert Dick, Karl Berger, Axel Dörner, Hannes Bauer, Heinz von Cramer, Terry Jenoure and Mariana Sadovska.
Besides his own projects he also composed for radio drama, movies and theatre and -among others- for choreographer Pina Bausch.
2007 he orginated the Spacebass, a modified 4 stringdouble bass with the addition of 12 sympathetic strings.
Sebastian Gramss is teaching at the Conservatory of Music in Cologne.
He recieved the ECHO award Bass 2013.
